They were met by five flights of Germans. In a real furball involving ramming and unintentional crashes all but one of the German planes were lost. On the last turn before the bombers were to exit the field the fourth Shturmovik was shot down, which meant a German victory. No Moderator.

Battle of Britain Campaign playtest. WW2 1/285. Blue Sky Rules. First four moves. German bomber attacks on two radar stations. First flight of 14 Ju87s, 4 Ju88s, 7 109s and 4 110s, were met by 14 Spitfires and 7 Blenheims. Germans won the engagement, destroying 10 British planes with minimal loses. Attack on the radar base by the Ju87s was ineffective. On the return the flight was met by 8 Hurricanes and 3 German fighters were lost. Bombing attack on the other radar station caused minimal damage. Some rule modifications became evident. Also playtested the new revised citical hit table. Moderator, Tom Sparhawk

  10. March 4, 2000
    1. Civil War - Johnny Reb 2.5 Rules - AP Hill's attack at Antietam. Half the US line could not advance. Other half attacked a weak center, captured two gun batteries and routed off a couple of regiments. A gallant but impractical cavalry charge by the CS lost 75% of the troopers. With US in firm control of the CS center, CS withdrew.
    2. Battle of Britain Campaign playtest. WW2 1/285. Blue Sky Rules. Moves five through thirteen. The two German attacking flights returned to France to rearm and repair. On move ten the Germans flew north and attacked radar site R6 and destroyed it. The 37 German planes were intercepted on their return flight by four spitfires, with the result being two spitfires shot down and minimal damage to the Germans. Moderator, Tom Sparhawk

    1. WW2 Air to Air combat. 1/300 scale. Blue Sky rules. Sixteen B-17s, unescorted, tried to fly through six German fighters. Eight of the B-17s were destroyed, the others badly damaged. No German planes lost. This was a play test of a con game to be put on at Barracks Battles next week, with the planes moving at random. Points given to fighters for damaging or destroying the B-17s. Moderator, Tom Sparhawk.

    2. WW2 Naval - Convoy raid. 1/1200 scale ships. Ship Base 3 rules. The Sharnhorst and the Von Hipper attacked a British Convoy of four oilers protected by the Royal Sovereign, one heavy and two light cruisers, and four destroyers. British were getting the worst of the deal until the Hipper took a torpedo and started to flood. After the smoke cleared two oilers escaped, and the only ships left were the Sharnhorst and the Royal Soverign. What a mess.

convention game with eight German players. Sixteen B-17s, unescorted, tried to fly through sixteen German fighters. No one had played this game before, and most did quite well. Only five B-17s made it through to the edge of the board. Two of the bombers lost both pilot and copilot. Six fighters were shot down. The whole game, including flight instructions, took 2 hours 15 minutes. The list below gives the names of the players and the points they scored in the game. Moderator, Tom Sparhawk.

    1. British Colonial 25mm scale. Sword and the Flame rules. Two British platoons with a gatling gun were ordered to check out a small settlement. They made it half way there. Zulus streamed out of the rocks and over the hills and destroyed one platoon and the gatling gun. They chased the other platoon out of the valley. British loses were 35 of 46 engaged. Zulus lost 38 of 120. A glorious washing of the spears. No moderator.

    2. Viking raid 25mm scale. Battle Troll rules. Three groups of vikings attacked a small farmstead to steal livestock. No livestock was taken, but carnage aplenty. Two viking heros were killed, one broke an agreement with the farm owner, one accidentially killed one of his own retainers, and one guy fell down a well. A couple of hurscarls broke into a shed only to discover a pack of wolves and a gang of townsfolks instead of the treasure they expected. Beside the ice storm, fog, rain, and constant falling down it was quite an interesting skirmish. No one would admit to being the moderator.

Civil War 15mm scale. Johhny Reb 2.5 rules. Cavalry were holding the ground as about 10 brigades per side came in randomly on one of three random roads. Five objectives were placed, where one side had to hold three to win. Union had excellent rolls as far as roads were concerned and came in evenly. Confederates bogged down with 60% of their force coming in on one road. Union right flank - six brigades - crushed the three confederate brigades facing it. Left flank fairly quiet. Clear Union victory. No moderator.

IJN lost two heavy and one light cruisers because they were severly damaged from an earlier air attack. US took no damage. It was not an even battle. Moderator - Tom Sparhawk.

Seven Airacobras flying CAP contested the attack with the usual results. Three airacobras lost to one zero. Nells had a rough time, though, with almost half of the flight shot down with relatively minimal damage to the airfield. Moderator - Tom Sparhawk

Civil War 15mm scale. Johhny Reb 2.5 rules. Two union corps were trapped in a pass. Two confederate divisions were assaulting from one direction and another confederate blocking force came in on their rear. Union had to get the majority of their force and some supply wagons off through the blocking force... Hidden markers used for blocking force originally were all false, and only two brigades came in to block. Confederates pushed uniformly across the main front and drove the union back to a second defensive position. Union detached a division to try to clear the blocking force. Union lost all of their smoothbore guns but held up well. Game ended in a draw. No moderator.

Civil War 15mm scale. Johhny Reb 2.5 rules. One big ridge in the middle of the table, with a pass as the objective. One brigade on each side deployed at start with 6 (CS) or 7(US) more brigades to enter randomly. Started well for the union as they had firm posession of the objective on initial deployment. Their position soon fell apart as a confederate brigade flanked their forward position. After some dancing around the serious fighting began. US right flank collapsed after it was pulled thin by a flanking movement and the weakened center was assaulted by a large CS brigade. US Left flank under pressure as well and in danger of collapse. The proverbial towel was thrown in after ten turns as the federals had lost most of their artillery and a significant number of troops. Clear confederate victory. No moderator.

British Colonial 25mm scale. Sword and Flame rules. 60 British Infantry, a 6 pounder, a gatling gun, and a correspondent from the Times occupied a three section fortification. Zulus attacked from four possible directions (randomly rolled for each unit). 120 Zulus attacked and were repulsed with moderate loses for the British. 120 more Zulus attacked and caused heavier British casualties. 120 more Zulus attacked again. British were able to defend only one section of the fortification on this final assault. It was a near thing with good service by the correspondent shooting a Zulu leader just before an assault. British had 14 infantry, 2 (of 8) gunners, and the correspondent when the final assault was repulsed. British victory. No moderator.

Five CS brigades attacked two US brigades and a fortification with two 30# Parrotts and two 8" Howitzers, and two regiments. Grueling fight for the flanks culminated with a combined assault on the fortification. After much slaughter the US asked for terms. Hard fought CS victory. No moderator.

    2. "Civil War" 15mm scale. Johhny Reb 2.5 rules. With three players we decided to do something odd - Paraguay was in a fort attacked by Brazil, Argentina and Peru. A medium works fort held the center with one brigade. The three other players attacked with three brigades each. All had repeating rifles. Assault by Brazil breached the works early as the defenders fled in terror from their attackers. Brazil then occupied the works as the defenders were slaughtered as were most other attackers. Brazilian victory as the others conceded. No moderator.

    • Battle of Front Royal Gap - Civil War Campaign battle. Johnny Reb 2.5 rules. 1430 to 1830. Two marching columns literally ran into each other a couple of miles south of Front Royal. After the initial surprise the Confederates held the important road junction and the Union formed up defensively. Minor probes through the afternoon of the Union left were repulsed. About 1630 a Union brigade entered the field from the north and was met by three Confederate brigades. After some initial frustrations the Confederates drove them from the field. Minor casualties on both sides. As night fell both sides dug in and waited for the dawn... Moderator, Tom Sparhawk.
